Friends of Travers Park

Friends of Travers Park is a JHBG program dedicated to beautifying and maintaining the grounds at the only official park in Jackson Heights and its most beloved green space.

Travers Park is located between 77th and 78th Streets and runs from 34th Avenue nearly to Northern Boulevard. Because it is our neighborhood’s main park, it serves a wide variety of residents who rely on it for relaxation and community. The park has a handball court, basketball hoops, separate playground areas for toddlers and older children, a hilly mound for passive recreation, and two tennis courts.

A Long History of Stewardship

Friends of Travers Park has been working to beautify the park grounds well before its transformation from playground to park. JHBG volunteers were among the first to care for this space, and their dedication helped lay the groundwork for the improvements the park has seen over the years, ultimately leading to its major redesign.

Friends of Travers Park has more recently also expanded its efforts to include caring for Playground Ninety, located between 89th and 90th Streets, between Northern Boulevard and 32nd Avenue.

Partnership with NYC Parks

In partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and City Park Foundation’s Partnership for Parks, Friends of Travers Park helps ensure the park remains a vibrant, well-maintained resource for the entire community by keeping it clean, adding plantings, and advocating for increased funding for programming and beautification projects.

Regularly held “It’s My Park!” events call for volunteer to participate in cleanup days, planting sessions, and general upkeep to keep the park looking its best.
