On April 21, 2018, JHBG will be working with NYC Parks to improve the median along 34th Avenue around 78th Street. Come out and join us from 10 AM to 1 PM. We will be meeting behind IS 145 in the parking lot on 79th Street.
JHBG Internship Position for 34th Ave Median Upgrade
We are looking for an intern to assist with a spring and summer project in Jackson Heights along the 34th Avenue median strip. There is a combined effort underway to revitalize the median with more greenery, pruning and improved soil to restore its original beauty as a neighborhood green space with JHBG and various city agencies.
The intern would help with documenting the entire median strip that extends from 69th street in front of the bowling alley and going to Junction Blvd. A thorough analysis of each block is needed to have a current record of the median and to assess where the greater issues are found at this time. The condition of all the plants and trees needs recording and assessment. Some tree and plant identification can be found using the NYC site below.

Some of the work can be done remotely but site visits and consultations are needed for other areas. The condition of the soil and the low growing plants and ground covers also needs documenting along with some determination of areas that collect significant trash. Some photography is involved as well as clear document preparation that we can use for the NYC Parks Dept. planners. We estimate some repetition between blocks but this project needs to account for all 26 blocks in the plan.
The first phase of the Internship would need to be completed by the end of March. The second phase would be in the following four to six months. School credit is available and someone who is in the field of Urban Studies, Horticulture or City Planning would be an ideal candidate. If they live in Jackson Heights that is a major asset.
