Graffiti Busters

Graffiti Busters

The JHBG graffiti busters removes graffiti and vandalism in Jackson Heights. Addressing graffiti quickly helps maintain the neighborhood’s appearance and discourages further vandalism.

Keeping Jackson Heights Clean

Graffiti detracts from the character of a neighborhood and, if left unaddressed, it can signal neglect and invite more vandalism. Cleaned areas abound around the neighborhood, from Leverich Street to the 90s, from Roosevelt Avenue to Northern Boulevard.

Much like other JHBG programs, graffiti busting work is all volunteer. The warm thanks received from so many neighbors make this very rewarding work. JHBG makes significant efforts to keep Jackson Heights as free from graffiti as possible. Once a spot is cleaned, it usually stays clean for a year or longer.

How It Works

Volunteers organize removal efforts at times working with local property owners and businesses to address graffiti on private surfaces, as well as with city agencies when appropriate.

To get rid of graffiti, you have three options:

  1. Clean it yourself. If the graffiti is on a painted surface, it’s inexpensive and quick to paint over it. You can even get free paint from the city (call 311). Graffiti cleaning materials are available from most hardware stores.
  2. Ask us for help. We generally focus on cleaning bricks using a power washer. But even if we ultimately can’t do it for you, we’ll try to help. Contact us at info@jhbg.org to request assistance.
  3. Ask to be put on the city’s graffiti cleaning list by calling 311. Historically, the city’s record with these efforts has been uneven. The person placing the complaint must be the property owner to get on the list and it takes some time. Building owners also can petition the city to remove the graffiti free of charge.
