Gardening and beautification is the heart of JHBG. Since 1988, our volunteers have maintained and expanded a network of 19 garden spots throughout Jackson Heights, transforming neglected public spaces into vibrant displays of flowers, shrubs, and greenery that brighten the neighborhood for residents and visitors alike.
Our gardening sessions run every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM during the growing season. Volunteers of all ages and experience levels work side by side, planting seasonal flowers, pruning shrubs, pulling weeds, spreading mulch, and performing general upkeep. The gardens are located along streetscapes, medians, and public spaces throughout the neighborhood.
Jackson Heights was originally designed as a garden community, with its distinctive cooperative apartment buildings arranged around shared green courtyards. JHBG’s gardening program carries forward that tradition by ensuring that the public spaces of the neighborhood remain beautiful, welcoming, and well cared for. Our gardens provide habitat for pollinators, reduce the urban heat island effect, manage stormwater, and contribute to the mental health and well-being of everyone who passes by.
Show up on any Saturday to volunteer, or make a financial contribution to help fund plants, soil, tools, and supplies. Every bit of support keeps Jackson Heights blooming.
