JHBG Travers Park Committee
The Travers Park Committee works to
improve Travers Park by cleaning, adding plantings, organizing and running
the popular "Summer Sundays in the Park" entertainment series,
and advocating for increased funding and obtaining grants.
Travers Park is located between 77th and 78th Streets and runs from 34th
Avenue nearly to Northern Boulevard. It's the only official public park
in Jackson Heights, and a wide variety of residents rely on and enjoy
the park. Early in the morning, dozens of people work on their T'ai Chi
form together. There are handball courts, basketball hoops, a tennis net,
and a toddler area. Sundays in the summer, from 9:00 a.m. to around 3:00
p.m., a Greenmarket brings fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as baked
goods, honey, eggs, and flowers, to the park.
If you're interested in volunteering with the Travers Park Committee,
please contact them by phone (718-565-5344) or email (info@jhbg.org).
One opportunity to volunteer is with weekly watering/clean-up crews.
In any case, come out to enjoy the park, whether you're playing with your
kids, shopping at the Greenmarket, or checking out a "Summer Sundays
in the Park" show (the full schedule is in the Events Calendar).
Major funding for "Summer Sundays in the Park" is provided by
the NYS Council on the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs,
distributed through the Queens Council on the Arts. Other help from the
Carnegie Hall/Citigroup Neighborhood Concerts, City Parks Foundation,
Partnership for Parks, and Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette.
In addition, the Travers Park Committee secured a grant from Starbucks
to add a number of plantings to beautify the park in 2006.
